Placental Disorders

Placental disorders refer to a group of conditions that affect the function and structure of the placenta during pregnancy. One common placental disorder is placental abruption, which occurs when the placenta detaches from the uterine wall before delivery, leading to bleeding and potentially compromising the oxygen and nutrient supply to the fetus. Placenta previa is another placental disorder where the placenta partially or completely covers the cervix, posing a risk of bleeding during pregnancy or labor. Placental insufficiency is a condition in which the placenta is unable to provide adequate oxygen and nutrients to the growing fetus, potentially resulting in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) or low birth weight. Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder that affects both the mother and the placenta, characterized by high blood pressure and organ damage.
