World’s First Renal Denervation Therapy in an Ectopic kidney
Apollo Hospitals Chennai made history by successfully performing the world’s first Simplicity Spyral renal denervation (RDN) therapy on a 58-year-old man with resistant hypertension and an ectopic kidney. Led by Dr. Refai Showkathali, the procedure involved radiofrequency ablation of two renal arteries, resulting in a significant reduction in the patient's blood pressure from 160/100 mmHg to 130/80 mmHg within a day. This innovative treatment marked the first global use of the FDA-approved Simplicity Spyral RDN catheter in ectopic kidneys, showcasing Apollo Hospitals' leadership in interventional cardiology.
