Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common hormonal disorder during their reproductive age. Women having PCOS have prolonged menstrual periods or high levels of male hormones(androgen). The ovaries may have many small collections of fluid and may fail to release eggs. The real reason behind this condition is unknown, but its early diagnosis and treatment can reduce long term complication such as type2 diabetes and heart disease.

Our guest speaker Dr.Aanchal shared her cases for a proper understanding on PCOS and its management

ملخص

  • Dr. Agrawal, a fertility and IVF specialist with over 18 years of experience, discusses Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a common hormonal disorder. The definition of PCOS is based on the Rotterdam consensus, requiring two out of three criteria: menstrual disturbances, polycystic ovaries on ultrasound, and clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism.
  • PCOS affects women of all ages, presenting different symptoms depending on age. In adolescents, it can manifest as irregular periods, weight gain, acne, and excessive hair growth. Management includes lifestyle modifications like diet and exercise, and hormonal therapy if needed.
  • In infertile women, PCOS management depends on their desire for pregnancy. If pregnancy is not desired, oral contraceptive pills can be used to regulate cycles and reduce androgen production. If pregnancy is desired, ovulation induction with oral medications or gonadotropins is necessary, and may involve laparoscopic ovarian drilling in certain cases.
  • Post-menopausal women with PCOS are at higher risk for endometrial hyperplasia and cancer due to long cycles and endometrial proliferation. Regular monitoring and endometrial biopsies are crucial for early detection and management. Controlling associated conditions like diabetes and hypertension is also essential.
  • Lifestyle management, including diet and exercise, is crucial for controlling PCOS in all age groups. A diet low in fats and processed foods, high in fiber, and rich in fruits and vegetables is recommended. Regular exercise, including moderate-intensity activities, is also important for weight loss and improving metabolic parameters.
