विवरण

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of balanced sleep for overall health and well-being, viewing it as one of the three pillars of life, alongside diet and energy management. According to Ayurvedic principles, sleep disorders can result from imbalances in the body's doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—each of which affects sleep differently. Remedies often include lifestyle changes, herbal treatments, and relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation. Ayurveda also advocates for "Brahma muhurta" (early morning waking) to harmonize the body’s natural rhythms, enhancing the quality of sleep and promoting mental clarity. By aligning sleep patterns with Ayurvedic principles, individuals can improve their physical, mental, and spiritual health

Ayurveda links sleep to physical functions, including mental faculties, emotional systems, digestion, metabolism, and the immune system. Good sleep promotes both physical and mental well-being. Lack of sleep impacts emotional systems and mental faculties.
  • Proper sleep contributes to healthy body weight. Medicine combined with good sleep practices enhance growth. Normal or moderate sleep maintains a balanced physique. Excessive sleep can lead to obesity. Good sleep increases both physical and mental strength.
  • Lack of sleep impacts semen quality and reproductive health. Adequate sleep supports healthy reproductive function, while insufficient sleep can reduce sperm count and semen quality. Sleep deprivation can lead to knowledge loss and sensory-motor dysfunction. Proper sleep enhances learning, memory, and sensory-motor faculties.
  • Normal sleep contributes to a longer life. Sleep impacts various physical systems, including cardiovascular. Sleep should be considered as a biological factor in diagnosis and treatment. Disturbances in sleep patterns can affect hormones like growth hormone.
  • Ayurveda emphasizes sleeping at night, suggesting rest during the day only to compensate for waking up at night. Day time sleep and night awakenings can lead to breathing problems, digestive issues, cardiovascular disease, memory impairment, and fatigue. Applying oil to the head at night, bathing before sleep, massaging the feet, and consuming buffalo milk can promote good sleep.
  • Remedies include massaging with curd water, consuming milk, sweet foods, and honey before sleep. Herbs like Ashwagandha, Brahmi, and Jatamansi can be helpful, along with specific herbal formulations under supervision. Panchakarma procedures such as Shirodhara can also be used. Sava chikitsa (mind therapy) addresses mental factors affecting sleep.
  • Sleep requirements vary based on individual constitution, with Vata types needing less sleep, Pitta types needing moderate sleep, and Kapha types needing more sleep. Studies show Ashwagandha reduces anxiety and depression, while Shirodhara and Yoga improve cognitive function and sleep quality. Maasa kwatha is effective for insomnia, anxiety, and depression, and ber oil also impacts insomnia in men. Treatment approaches also involve addressing stress factors.
