विवरण

Post-surgery cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program designed to aid individuals in recovering from heart surgery. It consists of phases encompassing exercise, education, and support, aimed at improving cardiovascular health, enhancing physical fitness, and reducing the risk of future cardiac issues, with a multidisciplinary team guiding patients towards a heart-healthy lifestyle.

सारांश

  • Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, including India, affecting both men and women. Heart attacks often result from plaque rupture in arteries with less than 50% blockage, challenging previous assumptions about stenosis. Plaque rupture, caused by vulnerable plaques with more lipid and thinner fibrous caps, can lead to sudden heart attacks. Angina, a symptom of obstructed blood flow, can present differently, including heaviness, breathing difficulty, and discomfort anywhere from the navel to the nose.
  • Controlling risk factors like high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, physical inactivity, obesity, and abnormal cholesterol profiles is essential for secondary prevention. Cardiac rehab is a class one recommendation that must be done along with the control of lipids, sugars, blood pressure, and aspirin. Effective cardiac rehab is comprehensive, including patient assessment, nutrition counseling, weight management, and psychosocial support, and exercise training.
  • Cardiac rehab involves phases, starting with early mobilization in the hospital and progressing through outpatient programs to maintenance. Benefits of cardiac rehab include reduced mortality, morbidity, re-admissions, and improved quality of life and functional capacity. The cardiovascular benefits of exercise include anti-atherosis, anti-thrombotic, anti-arrhythmic, and anti-ischemic effects.
  • Exercise prescription follows the FITT principle: frequency, intensity, time, and type. Aerobic and strength training are important, with 8 to 10 exercises of major muscle groups being sufficient for basic health benefits. Post-CABG rehab starts in the hospital with mobilization, breathing exercises, physical therapy, and patient education. Supervised exercise parameters include monitoring blood pressure, heart rate, and signs of angina.
