India faces a high burden of infections, including tuberculosis, pneumonia, and diarrheas, often complicated by antibiotic resistance.
- Infectious disease specialists address antimicrobial resistance by understanding its mechanisms and rationalizing antibiotic use. They also manage challenging fungal infections like candidiasis, aspergilosis, and mucormycosis. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the crucial role of these specialists in outbreak management, infection control, and treatment protocols. Furthermore, they are vital in managing infections in transplant patients who have compromised immunity.
- Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem linked to increasing antibiotic consumption and irrational use.
